As the second largest city in Texas, San Antonio has plenty of offerings for locals and tourists alike during the long Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-28, 2012). While none of the events from this list made our top five list, they are unique in their own right and deserve a dedicated post. Incredibly, it’s not easy to find information on San Antonio Memorial Day Events so we’ve come up with the following list to make it easier for you. We’ll keep it up to date as more events roll in. American Hero 25K Relay
When: May 27th, 2012
The American Hero 25K Relay offers 4 different races to choose from includeing: a 25K five person, team relay; 25K run for solo runners; 5K Run/walk; and Kids Fun Run/Walk. The goal is to raise money for local scholarships via entry fees and donations. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each adult division, all others will receive “The American Hero 25K Relay Memorial Medal”.
South Texas Heritage Center – Grand Opening @ the Witte Museum
When: Saturday, May 26th, 2012
Explore the history of South Texas at the grand opening of this 20,000 square-foot, two-story building hosting permanent exhibitions, historical collections, and state of the art museum technology. The permanent exhibition will feature artifacts from early Texas history focused on the interwoven Anglo-Saxon, Tejano, and Indian cultures.
Shop for handmade arts and crafts along the Riverwalk. From pottery to jewelry to fine art, your sure to find the perfect item at one of the booths set up for visitors to the Riverwalk over Memorial Day Weekend.
ComedySportz will be hosting its first tournament of 2012 during the Memorial Day weekend. There will be 3 shows in all with the winners of the first 2 shows facing off in the final competition of the evening. This is dubbed as a family friendly event.
What sounds better than a good old fashioined chili cookoff to kick off the summer? Perhaps a chili cookoff where the teams involved are actually concerned with feeding the masses rather than winning the competion As strange as it may sound, this chili cookoff does not guarantee that you will actually be eating in chili from the competing teams. However, there will be plenty of other food booths to choose from, live music and arts and crafts. Festivals and Events in the Austin and San Antonio Area for Memorial Day Weekend 2012
Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer for most Texas families, coinciding with the end of the school year. Following in our series of covering Central Texas events going on around Austin and San Antonio during the major holidays, we’ve been hard at work gathering info on this years festivities for Memorial Day Weekend in Central Texas. Because Memorial Day is also a time to honor our fallen heroes, it is also a time for reflection, thanks, and remembrance. We’ll be sharing ceremonies around Central Texas where you can go to honor our fallen soldiers and veterans in a forthcoming post. But, for now we’ll focus on family friendly events at which you can enjoy the unofficial start of summer in Central Texas.
Luckenbach’s 160th for the 4th dang time – Luckenbach, Texas
“Everybody’s somebody in Luckenbach” and to celebrate that famous motto, Luckenbach is throwing its 160th birthday party for the 4th time (or their 164th for the first time if you’re counting for real). As always, Luckenbach has plenty of concerts and festivities for the Memorial Day weekend including Rosie Flores on Saturday night (5/26) (all ages and no cover charge). The big celebration is on Sunday (5/27) with Micky and the Motorcars and Jason Eady, plus a vintage baseball game with old timey rules and uniforms starting at 5 p.m. (tickets are available here for $20). On Monday The Gourd’s Ice Cream Social will be providing rock and roll for the moms and dads and plenty of fun for the kids from 1 p.m.-5p.m. From then, you may want to head down to our #4 event, for a few hours before returning for Austin favorite Bob Schneider and his Texas Bluegrass Massacre starting at 8 p.m. (tickets are $20 and available here).
Kerrvile’s Annual Folk & Music Fest is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary this year, and as always, the festivities begin on the Memorial Day Weekend. To commemorate 40 years of this famous Central Texas music festival, they’ve lined up some well known special guests to get the 2 week festival kick-started. Austinites will be familiar with Guy Forsyth and Jimmy LaFave among others on Thursday, May 24th. Former Texas Gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman will be playing on Friday May 25th along with Austin band Milkdrive. Russian polka band Limpopo takes the stage on Saturday May 26th. On Sunday May 27th guitarist Tom Prasado-Rao will be debuting songs from his new album. Tickets for the festival are available on the Kerville Folk & Music Fest website and are priced at $30 (5/24), $35 (5/25), and $40 (5/26,5/27). The festival also features concerts and performers for children at the Threadgill Memorial Theater plus Kids-Ville, an activity and learning center.
Round Rock will be hosting the 43rd annual Fiesta Amistad, “Central Texas’ largest Hispanic 2 day event“, on Memorial Day Weekend 2012. The festival has grown steadily over four decades and this year will be hosted at the Lakeview Pavillion at Old Settler’s Park behind Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Festivities include concerts by Elida Reyna on (5/26) and Little Joe y la Familia (5/27) among others, as well as a car show on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and a horseshoe tournament on Sunday at 12 p.m. In addition to the music, there will be family entertainment and plenty of excellent food.
Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival – Fredricksburg, Texas
Fredricksburg presents it’s growing, 6th annual Crawfish fest from May 25th-27th. Enjoy a bit of New Orleans in the heart of Texas. The Crawfish festival in Fredricksburg offers visitors Cajun and country music, crawfish and German sausages, and lots of fun for the kids as well. Highlights of the event include appearances by Billy Mata & The Texas Tradition (5/25), Little Texas (5/26), multiple cajun and zydeco musicians, lots of crawfish, a Gumbo Cook-off (5/26), and a washer pitching tournament (5/26). Admission is a reasonable $7 for adults and $1 for children 12 & under with 2 and 3 day passes available as well.
The Cowboy Capital of the world, Bandera, Texas, will be hosting its 2012 RAM PRCA Pro Rodeo on Memorial Weekend, May 25th-27th. The rodeo will be going on all three days, while a BBQ cook-off will highlight Saturday’s events, and the 12th annual ‘Boot Kickin’ Golf Tournament will take place on Sunday. Kids activities include Mutton Bustin’, Calf Scramble and Stickhorse Races. Admission for adults is $12, ages 6-12 are $6, and 5 and under get in free!
